Understanding the Factors Contributing to Weight Gain in the Belly Area

Consumption of Sugary Foods and Beverages

Studies have shown a link between the consumption of sugar-rich foods and beverages, such as cakes, sweets, yogurt, frozen yogurt, soft drinks, sweetened coffee and tea, and sweetened drinks, and an increase in belly fat. The increase in belly fat is attributed to the high levels of fructose in these sugars. Another study noted that following a diet high in fructose leads to reduced metabolic rates and fat burning in the body, consequently increasing belly fat.

Alcohol Consumption

Some studies have found that drinking alcohol inhibits fat burning. Additionally, excess calories from alcohol are stored in the belly area, resulting in the appearance of a beer belly or what is commonly known as a ‘pot belly’.

Low-Protein Diets

Adequate protein intake is crucial in preventing weight gain as it promotes feelings of fullness and increases metabolic rates, thereby reducing calorie intake. Following a diet low in protein can enhance hunger, leading to an increase in belly fat. Research conducted on animals revealed that decreased protein intake raises the level of the neuropeptide ‘NPY’, which in turn increases appetite and promotes fat accumulation in the belly.

Certain Medications

Some medications contribute to weight gain in the belly area, including antidepressants, corticosteroids, medications for bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, migraines, seizures, diabetes, high blood pressure, and combined oral contraceptives.

Aging and Menopause

Menopause leads to lower estrogen levels in the body, resulting in higher belly fat percentage.

Excessive Intake of Saturated Fats

Overconsumption of saturated fats, such as fatty meats, can lead to increased belly fat.

An unhealthy lifestyle, including a lack of regular physical activity, can contribute to weight gain.

Inadequate Sleep

Not getting enough sleep can affect weight regulation.

Stress and Psychological Pressure

Stress and psychological pressure increase cortisol levels, which prompt the body to store excess calories in the belly.
