Belly Stretch Marks: Causes and Treatments
Understanding and Managing Stretch Marks During Pregnancy and Weight Changes
Belly Stretch Marks
Belly stretch marks are scars that form on the abdomen as long lines, which can be pink or white in color. These marks occur due to the stretching the belly undergoes, often resulting from weight gain or pregnancy in women. The skin becomes tight and dry, leading to pain and itching, particularly among pregnant women, especially in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.
Causes of Belly Stretch Marks
Physiological Causes
These are changes that affect the body, such as during pregnancy or adolescence.
Hormonal Causes
Conditions like Cushing’s disease, caused by excessive activity of the adrenal gland leading to cortisol hormone secretion, and Marfan syndrome, which affects collagen and elastic fibers in the skin due to connective tissue disorder. These conditions usually affect tall individuals and those with heart or bone issues.
Medication Causes
These are caused by long-term use of corticosteroid medications, whether taken orally or applied topically.
Affected Areas of the Abdomen
During pregnancy, stretch marks commonly appear on the sides of the abdomen, as well as the buttocks, chest, and thighs. In cases related to medication use or hormonal changes, stretch marks may also appear on the front of the abdomen and other areas like the thighs and armpits.
Treatment and Tips for Managing Stretch Marks
It is recommended to increase fluid intake, as fluids help alleviate skin dryness and itching caused by stretch marks. Staying hydrated is essential for the health of pregnant women and their babies. Additionally, the skin, being the largest organ, requires adequate moisture.
Applying olive oil to the abdominal area is advised, preferably without rubbing, or using moisturizing creams consistently. Avoid frequent bathing with warm water, as it can lead to skin dryness and increased sagging; instead, opt for cold water baths to maintain skin moisture.
After showering, it is crucial to dry the skin without rubbing, especially on dry areas. Regular exercise is also recommended, as it helps to tighten the skin for pregnant women and control weight gain.
Applying cocoa butter to the belly twice daily for a month can also be beneficial. Mixing equal parts of almond oil, olive oil, and glycerin, and applying it to the belly daily can help completely eliminate stretch marks.
